Red Fort (Lal Qila), Delhi, North India, a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
was a fort constructed by Shah Jahan in 1648 and it remained the main
residence of the Mughal emperors until 1857. The red-sandstone used
extensively in the outer walls explains the name. The ceiling in
multiple complexes inside the fort were lined with pure silver and the
famous peacock throne/Kohinoor diamond once adorned the palace. Every
year on 15th August, Prime Minister of India hoists the National Flag
and addresses the nation from the Red Fort
